Targeted Sampling, Quick Answers

Fine needle aspirates (FNAs) and other diagnostic sampling are performed using small needles to collect samples of cells from abnormal tissues. These samples can help us determine if your pet’s illness may be caused by infection, inflammation, or distinguish from different cancer types. Using ultrasound-guidance, our highly trained radiologist can sample these abnormalities which may be challenging for your primary veterinarian to access.

Pending owner consent, FNAs and Diagnostic sampling will typically be performed at the time of ultrasound or after CT if we see abnormalities which we feel may benefit from sampling to guide the next steps for the patient’s care.

The FNA Advantage

An FNA needle is no bigger than what is used for vaccines, allowing sampling of cells which can often distinguish between infection, inflammation, and various tumor types—giving you and your veterinarian clear direction for treatment. No anesthesia, minimal stress, maximum information.

Comprehensive FNA and other Diagnostic Sampling Applications:

  • FNAs: liver, spleen, lymph nodes, kidneys, adrenal glands, and other intra-thoracic and intra-abdominal tumors, cancer staging
  • Diagnostic Sampling: abdominocentesis, thoracocentesis, pericardiocentesis, urocystocentesis
