What is a Board-Certified Veterinary Radiologist (ACVR)?

What Does It Mean to Be an ACVR Board-Certified Veterinary Radiologist?

An ACVR Diplomate is a veterinarian who has gone through years of extra training to become a specialist in either Diagnostic Imaging (Radiology) or Radiation Therapy (Radiation Oncology).

To earn this certification, veterinarians must:

  • Complete veterinary school (DVM or VMD).
  • Do 1-2 years of internship or practice.
  • Spend 3–4 years in a residency program focused only on advanced imaging or radiation therapy.
  • Pass a difficult, two-part board exam.
  • Continue their education to stay current with new technology and techniques.

Because of this extensive training, ACVR board-certified radiologists are experts in using advanced imaging—such as X-rays, ultrasound, CT, and MRI—to help diagnose and treat pets.
